Hometown Show & More!! (June 30th, 2008) Sturges Motorsports has stayed very busy over the last few weeks, with events from Tucson to San Bernardino. We've had some great times, put on some good shows, and enjoyed the company of friends and fans along the way. Here's a recap of what we've been up to: May 17th - Lake Havasu, AZ - After a couple weeks off, we were back on the road in beautiful Lake Havasu. Ronnie carried the Sturges Motorsports banner high in the one-night only Monster Truck Thunder Slam at Havasu 95 Speedway, driving Nasty Boy to a clean sweep of the evening's competition, from straight line and Chicago-style racing to freestyle. Sam helped run the show while giving Rich Rutledge an opportunity to pilot Unnamed & Untamed for the first time. Rich did a fine job for his first outing. The Boogie Monster was also on hand giving fans a first hand experience of riding in a real monster truck. The line for rides out on the Speedway were long, but the Boogie Monster stayed until every fan who wanted a ride got one. June 14th-15th - Tucson, AZ - During another couple weeks off to help catch up on projects around the shop, excitement built for the second hometown show of the year over at the Rodeo Grounds in Tucson. Dale Penn always puts on a great Tournament of Destruction event, and the Sturges team would be going head to head with fellow hometown-er McGruff and Gary Schott's new Terminator machine. Friday night started off with, what we thought was a win for Ronnie and Nasty Boy in straight line racing, but a called red light handed the win to McGruff. Chicago-style racing was up next and Sam beat Ronnie in the semi-finals, but Unnamed & Untamed would fall to McGruff in the final round. Freestyle was all Nasty Boy despite a solid run from Unnamed, as Ronnie walked the truck up and down the track to the delight of the fans. Saturday would see Ronnie capitalize on his second chance at straight line racing, beating McGruff in a photo finish. The two trucks would meet again in the finals of Chicago-style and you could feel the tension as both drivers were determined to win. Ronnie was on the gas hard and launched Nasty Boy skyward--but on the landing, the left front wheel hit a wheelie bump causing the truck to pitch violently up on right side tires. Ronnie put the petal to the metal and pulled off a great save, bringing Nasty Boy back to all fours after being all the way up on the sidewalls. He may not have won the race, but his save definitely was the move of the night. Looking to close the show on a high note, Sam and Ronnie roared to the track together in freestyle, putting on a great dual run with both trucks pulling off some big wheelies to the delight of the hometown fans. Check out video of Ronnie's great save below courtesy of Bobbi Davis, see TheMonsterBlog.com site for footage of the whole show.
June 21st - Lancaster, CA - A tour of California was up next and the first stop would be for the Outlaw Monster Truck Spectacular at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster, CA. The Sturges team welcomed back Gary Schott Jr., who returns to the wheel of Unnamed & Untamed while the team is in California. In an event featuring rounds of freestyle only, both Ronnie and Gary put forth strong runs. To cap it all off, they teamed up for another tandem freestyle run which the crowd loved--see video of the run below, courtesy of YouTube. On to San Bernardino.
June 28th - San Bernardino, CA - The Orange Showgrounds would be the site for another one-night only Outlaw Monster Truck Spectacular event. Despite strong runs from Gary and Ronnie in the first two rounds of freestyle, they were topped by Natural High and Obsession for the win. So what did they do for round three? You guessed it. Another crowd-pleasing tandem freestyle. It just doesn't get much cooler than Nasty Boy and Unnamed & Untamed wheelie-ing down the track in opposite directions. And so closed another show on a high note for Sturges Motorsports. Next up is one of the biggest events of the year for the Sturges team. The huge San Diego County Fair in Del Mar for WGAS Motorsports. Nasty Boy and Unnamed & Untamed will take on an impressive field of competitors over several days of competition including Bounty Hunter, Rock Star, Iron Outlaw, Deal Breaker, Obsession, Play'N 4 Keeps and Natural High.
